Do you see the bricks falling off your College?
Just a thought on a quiet Sunday. In today ‘s world, information is: 1) short — micro-feeds, micro-blog, tweets et al 2) short-lived — what is relevant today, may not be as relevant 6 months later 3) fast — you can get access to information instantly through eBooks, online lectures, articles etc. The system of 3 or 4 year degrees seems archaic, atleast in IT. Gone are the days when knowledge was confined within 4 walls of an institution, disseminated only to a select few. Those degrees were designed to create ” all rounders” who can adapt to a different sphere of knowledge if it is required in future, probably to keep job prospects high. It defeats the very purpose of academic pursuit which a learning institute must espouse. Today, there is not a great chance that a computer programmer will need to know about, say “Control Systems”. For the 0.1 % probability that she does, that knowledge can be easily acquired at a later stage. This immense leverage of learning “when you need it” and only “as much as you need it” has now been made possible through technology. It makes learning more focussed and relevant. This is specifically true for IT, because IT has become a lifelong learning profession anyways.
